DJ Alex Dowson weighs up the myths and reality of the life of a DJ.
THE DJ IS A SEX MONKEY
Myth: DJs are a debauched bunch! They will jump into bed with anyone who offers them a cup of tea and a foot rub.
Reality: Most DJs are as picky with prospective partners as they are with their music. They just want to be loved for who they are deep down….underneath their shiny shirts.
THE DJ IS LOADED
Myth: DJs have money to burn and they squander it on oversized bottles of champagne
Reality: The majority of DJs don’t have much money. They have day jobs just like poor folk…And they use their meagre DJing income to buy music and 2 litre bottles of lucozade
THE DJ CRAFT IS EASY
Myth: The DJ roots around in their record collection, spins a few tracks and waves their arms in the air. That’s it!
Reality: Nonsense! DJs spend ages finding the right songs, arranging them and making sure they play right…Only then do we get to wave our arms in the air.
THE DJ LOVES THE DJ
Myth: What is it with DJs? They act as though playing a few records is more important than brokering peace in the Middle East.
Reality: We DJs are a humble bunch. All we do is bring musical harmony to the universe and give people a reason to live.
THE DJ IS SUPER-POPULAR
Myth: DJs! Pfft! They seem to be ridiculously popular. They get far more attention than your hard-working waitress or your trusty postman.
Reality: Just like the little people, DJs tend to have a small number of close friends, are wary of hangers-on and spend most of their time watching TV with an exceptionally large cat.
THE DJ IS A JET-SETTER
Myth: DJs are ferried about like royalty. They always seem to be flying off to DJ some mad party in the sun.
Reality: DJs never get chauffeured anywhere! We plan our own sessions, do our own marketing …AND then cart all our gear to the venue in a wheelbarrow!!
Alex Dowson is undoubtedly one of the best DJs alive in Doncaster. His upcoming album ‘DowSpin: The Wheelbarrow Sessions’ is out soon.
