1. – Carrot Cake @ Marmadukes (Norfolk Row, City Centre)

I’m not a massive cake fan. It takes quite a lot to tempt me to have a slice. And yet, every time I walk into Marmadukes and the smell of great coffee and tasty food hits me there is one cake that my eye is always drawn too. It has four decadent layers, sandwiched with a creamy, buttery icing and is topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon. Each layer is moist (terrible word I know!), moreish, spiced generously with cinnamon and ginger… and well it might just be the best carrot cake I’ve ever had! (Sorry Mum!). I can never leave Marmadukes without a slice.

2. – Mozzarella Focaccia @ Bragazzis (Abbeydale Road)

If you’re looking for a light Saturday lunch, then Bragazzis is the place to go. Friendly staff and a great atmosphere, this is a hug of a place. One of my favourite things about this cafe is the fact that you can choose your own sandwiches. I’m a bit of a traditionalist and always go for tomato, fresh squidgy mozzarella and black olive tapenade. It’s all served on fresh, salty herby focaccia. However, you choose any filling you like and the artichokes are always a great shout! I always vote to go the extra mile and have mine toasted as well, just to add that extra touch of decadence.

3. – Mushroom Baked Eggs @ Forge Bakehouse (Abbeydale Road)

Sunday brunch is my favourite time of the week. You grab a newspaper for quiet time or you take some friends and head to Forge Bakehouse. Thankfully, they’ve started serving the most amazing eggs. Baked eggs are a fantastic comforting treat and these eggs in particular are to die for! There are a couple of options but I always go for the mushroom baked eggs served in a creamy béchamel sauce with kale and other greens. They’re perfectly-seasoned and most importantly, baked but runny. They also come with a generous stack of warm sourdough toast straight out the oven. Sorry. I’m drooling again!
