There are some great shows coming to the Sheffield stage, Mon. 5 Dec. – Sun 11 Dec. 2016. Social Sheffield Stage Editor, Valerie Monti Holland, shares her recommendations.
1. – PechaKucha Night, Vol #22 – ‘Tis the Season
Queens Social Club, 4 Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG
Thurs. 8 Dec. Doors open at 19:00, Show starts at 20:00.
Tickets: Standing – £6.00, seated – £9.00. Buy tickets here.
PechaKucha (or PK as it is often affectively known) is back on the 8 December, this time at Queens Social Club. Started in Tokyo by an architecture firm, the PechaKucha concept gives guest speakers the opportunity to share their take on on a particular theme. Curated by Pennie Raven and Jonny Douglas, the theme this time round is “Tis’ the season”. Each speaker can make use of just 20 images with just 20 seconds per image to make their point, making each presentation a palatable 7 minutes. The event provides more than just brain food. You can also catch some indelible short films and incredibly fine music.
This is Sheffield’s 22nd PechaKucha, with the PechaKucha movement now leapfrogging over 900 cities worldwide.
2. – Aladdin (Adults Only)
Library Theatre, Surrey Street, S1 1XZ
Fri., 9 Dec – Sat., 10 Dec, 19:30 – 21:30.
Tickets: £12 + booking fee. Buy tickets here.
Aladdin is coming to the Library Theatre this weekend, but this is not just another fun-for-all-the-family Christmas panto. This is adults only! Far Out Theatre promises bad language, tasteless jokes and very rude antics. It’s set to be a properly filthy version of Aladdin. We can only wonder what wishes the genie might grant! This is the first adult panto for Far Out Theatre and perhaps it will become a yearly tradition(?) Leave the kids at home.
3. – The Burly Q Burlesque and Cabaret Winter Ball 2016
Sheffield City Hall,
Sat. 10 Dec. Doors open at 19:30, Show starts at 21:00.
Tickets: From £25.50 for show only, including VIP dinner from £51.70. Buy tickets here.
Burly Q brings us another 18+ option for the holiday season with a bit of burlesque! Expect a combination of circus, burlesque and cabaret, with internationally renowned stars such as Vicky Butterfly, Beau Rocks, Bonnie Fox, Kiki DeVille, Ian Marchant, Craig Gadd, and Russell Bruner. This is all part of Sheffield’s Annual Winter Ball, now in its fourth year, and is appropriately kicking up its heels in the Art Deco Ballroom at Sheffield City Hall. After the show, There’ll be opportunities aplenty to dance into the wee wee hours with music from ‘vinyl vintage’ DJs. The ball sold out last year, so book tickets as soon as you can.
